Research Objectives:

Although the main role of transportation is connecting people and places to drive economic activities and human welfare, it is also a major source of greenhouse gas emissions and other forms of pollution which impacts the environment and human health. As transport activity is increasing around the world due to the growth of economies, it unavoidably increases this sector’s emissions. As a result, many problems such as how to enlarge the existing networks, mange the capacity of the existing ones, and handle the introduction of new technologies such as autonomous vehicles and connected vehicles need to be addresses.

Regarding the managing the capacity of the existing networks, should we be looking into adding new links (i.e., roads) to address the ever increasing vehicle loads on the network, or should be looking into incorporating protocols (e.g., hourly or regional) to limit he access of network to certain vehicles? Regarding the environmental concerns, should all carriers be allowed on all parts of the networks? Should a hazardous material carrier be passing school zones? Or should all hazardous material carriers be exposed to the same restrictions no matter their hazard level load? What about autonomous vehicles? Can Regular and autonomous vehicles co-exist? Would the human drivers’ behavior be affected by the autonomous vehicles? The following papers answers these questions.
